Origin/meaning

It is not known when Haselünne first became a city, but the city rights were re-granted in 1271 by bishop Gerhard of Münster. From the same time the first seal is known. It already showed the present arms. The origin of the two bars is not known. It has been speculated that these are derived from the arms of Oldenburg, or of same bishop of Münster. But so far the origin remains unknown. In the 18th century St. Paul was added as a supporter standing behind the shield. St. Paul is the patron saint of Münster.
