Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1908 and confirmed in 1934 and are based on a 15th century seal.

Before the city used a seal with the lion of Nassau rising from a tower. In the 15th century the lion was misinterpreted as a jay (canting, Häher in German) and above the tower a façade with small towers was added. In the 17th century the bird appears solely on the seals as the symbol of the town.
