Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1965, previously the municipality simply used the district arms.

The shield shows the local castle built in the 14^th century by the Counts of Schaumburg and renovated in 1871-3. The small shield shows the arms of the former district of Schaumburg-Lippe.

The waves symbolise the Steinhuder lake, that borders the city. The two branches symbolise the fact that the village was founded in the 14^th century after clearing the forests.
