GYŐR

Province (county) : Győr-Moson-Sopron

Győr (címer, arms)
Official blazon
Hungarian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms show the patron saint of the city, St. Stephen, combined with the image of the local castle. The red field with the silver waves refers to the Danube, Rába and Rábca rivers in/near the city.

The arms have been used as such already since the 18th century.

During the Socialist rule the saint was replaced by a cogwheel , hammer and candle as symbols for the local industry. In 1990 the old arms were restored.
