Arms (crest) of Gudme

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially registered in 1978.

The black squirrel is taken from the crest of the arms of the medieval noble Friis family, who lived at the Hesselagergaard estate in the municipality. The squirrels eat a hazelnut, which is canting for the estate (Hessel=hazel). The cross is taken from the arms of the Gudme Herred, to which most of the municipality belonged.
