GREIN

State : Oberösterreich
District : Perg

Grein.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 2nd, 1468 by Duke Siegmund from Österreich-Tirol, who at the time owned the estate Werfenstein, to which the village belonged.

When Grein received town rights on August 21, 1491 the arms were confirmed. The arms simply show the dangers of shipping on the Donau (Danube) in the 15th century. Shipping was of great importance for the town. The arms show a wooden ship with three pilots manoeuvring between the rocks in the river.
