Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 1, 1954

Gourock was created a burgh in 1694. The arms retain rnarry of the features of the device on the seal adopted by the Burgh in 1892. The right sideshows a version of the arms of Stewart of Castlemilk with their crest of a red hand clasping a skean incorporated in the chief. The left side incorporates the main features of the arms of Darroch of Gourock, who purchased the lands of Gourock in 1784, with their crest of a negro holding a golden skean added in the base.

The motto is "Avant" (for Stewart) and "Be Watchful" for Darroch.
