GITS
Province : West-Vlaanderen
Incorporated into : 1977 Hooglede
Official blazon
- (1819) Van lazuur beladen met een st. Andrieskruis van goud, waarop 5 ringen van lazuur.
- (1846) D'azur au sautoir d'or chargé de cinq annelets d'azur.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1819 and confirmed on June 27, 1846.
The arms are a combination of the arms of the Praet and Van den Berghe families. The estate of Gits became a possession of Jozef-Frans van den Berghe in 1451, who originated from the Praet family. His family had combined the cross with the old arms of the family with the rings in the early 15th century.
As no colours were specified the arms were granted in the Dutch national colours. After the independence of Belgium in 1830 the arms were confirmed, but the colours were not changed.
