Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on April 26, 1962.
The arms are a combination of the lion of Jeverland and the cross of the Counts of Aldenburg-Bentinck. The Jeverland area and the Lords von Jever both used the lion in their arms since the 14th century. There may be a relation to the arms of the whole territory of Friesland (which ran from the East of the Netherlands to the Danish border), see also the arms of the Dutch province of Friesland.
The district is made up of the former Jeverland and Varel, Minsens, Tettens and Kniphausen. The Counts of Aldenburg-Bentinck were the last Lords of Varel and Kniphausen, from 1733 onwards.
