Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 23, 1993.

The arms show the locally important Oberbaumbrücke, a landmark for the district. The base shows a carp, already taken from the older arms of the district and a symbol for the formerly important fishing in the area. Originally they are the arms of the municipality of Stralau, which became a part of Berlin-Friedrichshain in 1920.

The arms replaced arms granted in 1987 (shown below).

These arms shows the Karl-Marx-Allee, the main street in the district, and the bear for Berlin. The street indicates the rebuilding of the city after the destruction in the Second World War.

Before 1987 the district used unofficial arms with in the upper half the arms of Berlin as used in the GDR times, and in the base the fish of Stralau.
