Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 25, 2004.

The three scythes are taken from the arms of the Von Strele family, lords of the village in the 14th century. The oldest known use as city arms dates from 1406. The arms thus have bascially not changed since.

For some period of time, however, the city used arms with an arm holding a pair of scales and coming from a cloud. These indicate justice and represented the local court. On a 19th century seal, shown below, the two were still combined, a shield showing the scythes under an arm with the scale.
