Origin/meaning

Freiburg received town rights in 1271 and the oldest seals of the city date from before 1300.

The oldest seal already showed a fortified gate and two crossed keys. The gate most likely symbolises the strong castle built in the village in 1154 by the Archbishops of Bremen. The city was a longtime possession of the archbishops. The keys also are the symbol of the diocese of Bremen. The colours again are derived from the colours of Bremen.
