Origin/meaning

Espelkamp was founded on an old industrial area in 1947 for homeless people from Eastern Europe. The new village named itself after the tiny village nearby. In 1959 it received city rights and in 1966 the arms were granted.

The aspen leaves in the upper part are canting (Espen), the lower part shows the Christian cross, as the village was founded as an initiative of the Church. The colours green, silver and black were chosen for Sachsen (green/silver), Prussia (black/silver)and the Teutonic Order (black/silver) as the historical territories from which the new settlers came.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
