Origin/meaning

The arms are canting, an oak tree (Eiche) and a city gate (Stadt). The oldest seal of the city dates from the late 13th century and already shows the same composition. Later seals and images all show the same composition, but the size and shape of the gate and the tree differ widely.

The oldest known colour images date from the 16th century and show a red gate in a silver field. The present colours are used since 1819.
