Origin/meaning

The fish is the oldest known symbol of the city and can already be seen on a seal of the city from 1244. The lion is the lion of Flandre/Vlaanderen as the city was made into a larger port by the Counts of Vlaanderen in the 13 and 14th centuries. The lion appeared already on the contra-seals in the 14th century. The oldest image of the arms where the lion and fish are combined dates from 1460. The arms basically have never changed, except for the supporter and, in the 20th century, the medals awarded to the city.
