Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Dobele was founded in the 10th century on a crossroad of trade ways. It was one of mightiest Zemgali castles and a rich city. Germans destroyed the city during the conquest of Zemgale, but the castle remained free until 1274 or 1289 (facts are not clear). In that year Zemgali people lost the hope to defend their land. They set the castle on fire and retreated to Tervete, the last free Zemgali castle.

Germans built a castle Doblen in the same place in 1335. The town developed around this castle. In 1917 city rights were granted.

The arms show a sword on field in the National Flag colours. The sword reminds the holding of Zemgali freedom, and the national colours encourage the defending of Latvia with bravery.
