DIOCESE OF ANTWERPEN (Dioecesis Antverpiensis)

Country : Belgium
Denomination : Roman Catholic
Established : The diocese was established in 1560, but the first bishop died before being ordained, so the official first bishop was ordained in 1569. The diocese was abolished in 1798 and re-established in 1962.

Arms of the Diocese of Antwerpen

Origin/meaning

The arms show St. Mary, the local patron saint. The chapter of the local church already used a seal in the 15th century showing the saint. This was the base for the arms, which were adopted in the mid 1600s.
