Arms of Chełm

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The meaning of the arms is not known, but there is a legend:
During the Mongol invasion, the invaders plundered the city. When searching for hidden people, they entered one of the caves nearby, but a moment later they ran out of panic, escaping from a white-faced bear, because in their beliefs a white bear was a being worshipped like a deity. The residents of Chełm, in gratitude for the white bear, placed him in their coat of arms .
