Origin/meaning

The arms were devised and granted on January 8, 1968.

There are no older arms or seals known. The arms show in the right part the arms of the Lords of Stiebar, from which one branch named themselves Lords of Buttenheim and lived in the town from the 14th century until 1762. The left part shows under a red head the knife of St. Bartholomew, patron saint of the town. The colours are taken from the arms of the Bishops of Bamberg, who ruled the town from the 15th century until 1803.
