Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 19, 1949.

The arms show the arms of the main territories that ruled the district in historical times. The chief shows the cross of the State of Köln, the archbishops of Köln had one of their main residences in Bonn. The black lion is the lion of Jülich, the red one the lion of Berg. The Western part of the district belonged to the Duchy of Jülich, the Eastern part to the Duchy of Berg.
