Origin/meaning

The donkey is derived from the arms of the St. Alban monastery in Mainz, as the abbot was the governor of the village for the Archbishops of Mainz. The above combination of donkey, through and branch was first used in the first decade of the 20^th century, and later placed on a shield and used as arms. The meaning and origin of the additional elements is not known.

The donkey appeared alone on the oldest seal of the town, dating from around 1600. In 1623 the other elements appeared on the seals.

In 1956 the arms of Bodenheim were shown in the Hessisches Ortswappenbuch as below, so with only the donkey.
