Wappen von Bleicherode/Arms (crest) of Bleicherode
Official blazon
German In Gold ein silber geharnischter Ritter mit einem geschlossenen gotischen Helm vor auf einem Stück grünen Boden stehend.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms date from the 15th century and show a knight holding a small shield with the arms of the Hohnstein family, the crest also shows the deer antlers of the family. The arms thus indicate that the town was a possession of the Counts von Hohnstein. The Counts held the hunting rights (crest) and were the judges in the town (sword). Only in the 16th century the town received city rights and thus also its own court.

There is also a legend on the history of the arms:
In Medieval times there were many thieves and bandits in the forests near Bleicherode. One day a knight in full armour rode into the city with his soldiers and cleared the forests of the bandits. The people were so happy that the placed an image of the knight on their coat of arms.
