Origin/meaning

The arms were officially registered on June 15, 2006.

The name of the municipality means blue-forest-area and this is reflected in the arms. The region is characterised by many birch forests, hence the birch leaf, as well as lakes, among these the largest natural Icelandic lake, Þingvallavatn, which is characterised by the blue colour of the arms.
