Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 5, 1973.

The cogwheel in the center symbolises the many industries and their importance for the local economy. The fleur-de-lis is the symbol of St. Mary, patron saint of the city. The wavy bar symbolises the Tietê river in the city. The cannon in the base of the arms indicate the artillery regiments based in the city.

The golden chief symbolises the city's wealth. The cross is a symbol of Portugal and indicates that the city was founded during Portuguese rule. The two cinquefoils in the chief are canting, barueri means 'enchanting red flowers' in the local Indian language.

The shield is surrounded by sugar cane and corn branches, the main agricultural crops in the area.
