Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 7, 1910 and confirmed on August 12, 1970.

The town got city rights in 1222 by bishop Engelbert of Köln (Cologne). The first seal of the city showed the patron saint of the diocese, St. Peter, with a crescent next to his head. The crescent may be the symbol of St. John Baptist, the local parish saint. Later seals show St. Peter sitting on a throne, sometimes with a shield with the arms of the diocese (black cross) at his feet. In the 15th century the crescent is placed in the first quarter of the shield.
