ARCHDIOCESE OF UPPSALA

Denomination : Lutheran

Arms (crest) of Archdiocese of Uppsala

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms can already be seen in the 1290s in a Seal of Archbishop Nils Alleson. The Cross is of course the foremost Christian Symbol, and in 1164 when the Archdiocese was created the first Archbishop Stefan did receive from the Pope pieces from the True Cross. After the Reformation the Coat of Arms with the Cross had some competition with a Picture of St Erik. But in 1964 at the 800th Jubilee of the creation of the Archdiocese thearms with the Cross were finally reinstated.
