Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms show an eagle, the 'protector' of Northern Iceland in the Heimskringla Saga in which the history if Iceland is described. Akyureyri is the largest city and capital of North Iceland. The small inescutcheon with the gard is a canting element, Akureyri can be translated as wheat-island.

The blue shield refers to the blue sky and the mountains surrounding the city.
