Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 18, 1992.

From 1662 up to (probably) 1848 Afritz (now: Afritz am See) and its neighbouring villages were under the rule of the old aristocratic family of the Counts of Porcia (later on: Princes of Porcia). This family has been residing at the castle of Porcia near Pordenone, west of Udine, in Friuli, Italy, since the 12^th century.

In 1960 the Porcia family authorized the representants of the municipality of Afritz to use elements of its own family coat of arms as a base for a coat of arms newly to be designed for the village/municipality of Afritz.

Whereas the Porcia arms is represented by a vaulted oval shield with, as a main feature, six golden lilies figuring on a blue surface, the newly created coat of arms of Afritz am See contents itself with five yellow lilies instead of six.
