The upper part of the arms show the lion of [[Jülich]], as a large part of the district was ruled by the Counts of Jülich. The swan on the antler is taken from the former capital of the district, [[Burtscheid (Aachen)|Burtscheid]] (now part of [[Aachen]]). It is the arms of the counts of Woestenraedt, who owned the city Burtscheid.
