Origin/meaning

The Division was activated in 1917 with Units from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Disbanded in 1919, it was reactivated in 1924 and disbanded in 1945. Reactivated in 1947 it become a an entirely North Carolina Manned Unit in 1954 when the Tennessee part left to become part of the 30th Armored Division. On 4 January 1974 the division was inactivated and the 1st Brigade become the 30th infantry Brigade (Mechanized) (Separate) and the 2nd Brigade the 218th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized)(Separate). The Divisional Insignia alludes to the Nickname Old Hickory and the Roman Numeral XXX = 30.
