2ND ARMORED DIVISION HELL ON WHEELS, US ARMY

History: Raised in July 1940 and deactivated in December 1995.

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Description: An equilateral triangle, one point up, above a horizontal tab attached in base, the overall dimensions of triangle and tab 4 1/16 inches (10.32 cm) in height and 3 7/8 inches (9.84 cm) in width, the triangle divided into three sections, the upper section yellow, the dexter section blue and the sinister section red, overall a gun bendwise in front of a tank track and wheels all black, surmounted by a red lightning flash bend sinisterwise. In the apex the Arabic numeral "2" in black, all within a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) green border, with the inscription "HELL ON WHEELS" in black letters 5/16 inch (.79 cm) in height.

Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A gold color metal and enamel insignia 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height consisting of an equilateral triangle one point up, divided into three sections, the upper section yellow, the dexter section dark blue and the sinister section scarlet, a gun bendwise in front of a tank track and wheels, all black and overall a red lightning flash bend sinisterwise, in the apex the Arabic numeral "2" in black; all above a gold scroll inscribed "HELL ON WHEELS" in black letters

Origin/meaning

Shoulder Sleeve Insignia: Yellow, blue and red are the colors of the branches from which armored units were formed. The tank tread, gun and lightning flash are symbolic of mobility, power and speed. The division's designation is in an Arabic numeral.

The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was originally approved on 22 November 1940. It was amended for the addition of a tab on 16 August 1954. The insignia was further amended to revise the design to make the insignia and tab in one piece on 4 November 1970. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 11 April 1969.
