10TH AIR BASE WING, US AIR FORCE

History: Established as 10 Reconnaissance Wing on 14 November 1947. Organized on 3 December 1947. Redesignated as 10 Tactical Reconnaissance Wing on 25 August 1948. Inactivated on 1 April 1949. Activated on 10 July 1952. Redesignated as: 10 Tactical Fighter Wing on 20 August 1987; 10 Air Base Wing on 31 March 1993. Inactivated on 1 November 1994. Activated on 1 November 1994. Performed tactical reconnaissance, 1947–1949. Replaced 117 Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Toul-Rosieres AB, France, in July 1952. Provided weather reconnaissance, 1952–c. 1960, and tactical reconnaissance (day and night, multi-sensor), 1952–1988. Replaced 7560 Air Base Group at RAF Alconbury, England, in August 1959, and became responsible for operation and maintenance of that installation. Operated from RAF Wethersfield, England, 3 July–31 October 1972. Took part in frequent tactical exercises of USAFE and NATO. Dropped two (of three) reconnaissance squadrons in 1976 and gained the 527 Tactical Fighter Training Aggressor Squadron. This unit, equipped with F–5Es in May 1976, provided “dissimilar” air combat training for USAFE fighter and reconnaissance wings, 1976–1988. Wing assumed a fighter mission, conducting fighter operations training in support of US and NATO war plans, 1988–1992. Deployed the 511 Tactical Fighter Squadron and other wing personnel to Saudi Arabia in late 1990 in support of operations in Southwest Asia and subsequent humanitarian relief extended to Kurdish settlements in Iraq through May 1991. In 1992, mission changed to support of USAFE special operations units. Wing remained a support organization when activated in 1994 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Origin/meaning

The 10th Reconnaissance Group Coat of Arms was approved 29 December 1942. The Coat of arms from the Wing was approved on 20 June 1995.
