Überlingen became a city in the early 13<sup>th</sup> century and shortly after an Imperial city. The oldest known seal dates from 1244 and show the Imperial Eagle. The breast shield was granted in 1528 by Emperor Charles V, creating the present arms.

The lion is the lion of the Habsburg dynasty to which the Emperor belonged. The arms never really changed except in the 19<sup>th</sup> century when sometimes the arms of [[Baden (State)|Baden]] were used instead of the lion and different colours were used for the escutcheon.
