Origin/meaning
Sturt's Desert Rose appears on the flag of the Northern Territory, and is the floral emblem for the territory. Bishop Ted Collins was a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, hence the heart with the cross. He was known for his advocacy of the rights of indigenous Australians and for encouraging their active involvement with his denomination. Given the Northern Territory's vast inland expanses and extensive coastline, the fish and goanna can be seen as suitable symbols of the people he served.
