Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1541 by Count Georg of Erbach, when the city received its new seal. The decoration in the lower field appears in the early 17th century and was not part of the original arms. The arms have not changed since. The stars are derived from the arms of the Counts of Erbach, but why the division of the shield was chosen is not known.
