Escudo de Sant Sadurní d'Anoia

Official blazon

Escut caironat truncat: al 1r de sinople, una premsa de raïm d'or acompanyada de 2 raïms pampolats d'or; i al 2n d'or, 4 pals de gules. Per timbre una corona mural de vila.

Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 11th May 1990.

The press and the grapes refer to the main industrial activity in the town: Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is one of the main centres of the wine area of Penedès, and the first one because of its champagnes, named here "cava" (Sant Sadurní introduced the elaboration of champagne in Catalonia in 1879, and nowadays the 40% of the town's population works in this sector).

The arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or) remind the royal jurisdiction over the town: Sant Sadurní has belonged to Subirats council (from the 13th to the 18th centuries), that was incorporated to the Crown by the king Ferdinand II the Catholic.
