Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 15, 1997.

The arms show the Tagus river near the city, with a typical river boat, which has been used by the local people for centuries. The boat thus refers to the economic development of the city. The chief shows the cross of the Order of Santiago, which played a major role in the local history. The shells are also a symbol for St. James (Santiago).
