Origin/meaning
Sloka is the oldest settlement among parts of present Jūrmala. German knights built a mill here. Gradually the town, called Schlock in German, developed.
In 1785 Sloka was taken from the Kurzeme dukedom to the Russian Empire. City rights were granted in the same year. Sloka used the Russian imperial eagle as its arms.
After the independence of Latvia the arms were granted in 1925: a gate, guarded by two crossed swords. It means that Sloka is the gate of Riga.
