Incorporated into : 1975 Brakel

Gehrden.jpg

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms show St. Peter, the patron saint of the city. The arms were granted in 1955 and were based on the oldest seal of the city (city rights in 1319).

The seal and arms were used until 1662, when the saint was changed into a nun. In 1136 a Benedictan nunnery was founded in the village and it is likely that the nun is symbolising the nunnery. In 1955 St. Peter was restored.

The previous arms were granted on June 25, 1909 by King Wilhelm II of Prussia. These arms showed the nun as used since 1662.
