Origin/meaning

The lion is derived from the old seal of the Amt Medingen, to which the area historically belonged. The seal showed two lions.
The wavy bar symbolises the Ilmenau river and the Elbe-Seitenkanal (channel) that run through the municipality.
The wheel symbolises the unity in the Samtgemeinde, with 8 spokes for the 8 individual municipalities. The wheel also symbolises the old medieval trade route through the area, as well as the modern road system.
The colours symbolise agriculture (gold) and forests (green).
