HELENA

State : Montana

Arms (crest) of Helena

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The pickaxe and shovel reflect Helena's origin in 1864 as a mining community. Reference to the Gulch does likewise, as the city was founded in Last Chance Gulch along Last Chance Creek. Typical naming for a mining community.

The structure drawn twice in the arms is literally known as the "Guardian of the Gulch". This is a watch tower built in 1874 for the purpose of looking for forest fires. It still stands at the end of Last Chance Gulch and it is a symbol of the community.
