Origin/meaning
The Duchy of Ragusa (now Dubrovnik, Croatia), has a very complicated history. Created as an independent state in the 7th century it was a protectorate of the Byzantine Emperors. From 1358-1526 the Kings of Hungary acted as protectors. In 1806 the French conquered the area. In between the Turks ruled the territory. In 1814 it became an Austrian possession and was made a Duchy. A little later it was joined with Dalmatia. The arms were already used by the Republic in medieval times.
