Escudo de Mataró

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

Mataró, a city of Roman origin (it was named Iluro), was born around the castle of Mata. In the 15th century it passed to the royal jurisdiction (this fact is shown by the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon, four pales Gules on Or). The distinctive and traditional arms of the city are canting: a hand holding a "mata" (Catalan for "bunch").

These arms are not official, but widely used by the local council, since at least 1619.
