EISENERZ

State : Steiermark
District : Leoben

Wappen von Eisenerz (Steiermark)/Arms (crest) of Eisenerz (Steiermark)
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on August 31, 1948. Eisenerz (literally: iron ore) has been mining town for more than a 1000 years. So, a miner in traditional white attire forms the principal charge, holding the Austrian National arms ensigned with a miner's tools.

The chief mining site, the Erzberg (ore mountain), has been included into the arms. It has always been important enough to be dubbed the "eiserner Brotlaib" (iron bread). Surface mining has shaped the mountain into a sequence of huge steps.

I an armorial from 1445 the arms for the town show an ostrich holding a horseshoe (compare Leoben). This symbol is based on the legend that an ostrich was an iron (or metal) eating bird, and was thus used more frequently in iron-mining towns.
