Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 19, 1951.

The upper part shows three lapwing eggs, the lapwing is a very common bird in the area. The two eel-like fist are European weatherfish (Putaale; Misgurnus fossilis), a common fish in the marshlands in the municipality.

The pot in the base is a symbol for the Bronze Age findings and therefore for the longtime inhabitation of the region.

The colours are those of the former Oldenburg county, to which the region historically belonged.
