Origin/meaningThe arms were officially granted on July 14, 1909 and again on April 28, 1972. The arms are supposedly canting, two knights holding hands, thus forming a bond (zum Bunde). It is based on the fact that the two Germanic warlords, Hengist and Horsa, in the 5th century on the spot of the present city formed a pact to invade England.
