WILLIAM LAWRENCE ADRIAN

Born : April 16, 1883
Deceased : February 13, 1972

Bishop of Nashville, 1936-1969

Arms (crest) of William Lawrence Adrian

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms are based on those of Pope Adrian V and show the silver and blue bars of the Fieschi family, and thus symbolise the family name of the bishop. The cross and lion are taken from the arms of St. Ambrose College, to which the bishop was attached for as long time.
