BERNARD THEODORE ESPELAGE
Born : February 16, 1892
Deceased : February 19, 1971
Bishop of Gallup, 1940-1969
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The personal arms show an aspen tree, Espe in German and thus a canting element, also referring to the German ancestry of the bishop. The chief shows the arms of the Franciscan Order, to which the bishop belonged. The same design of the personal arms was also used by his brother Sylvester Joseph Espelage.
