The shamrock recalls St. Patrick, patron of the Cathedral in Fort William. The "Chi-Ro", is the Greek monogram of Jesus Christ, Saviour, Leader, Teacher.

The lily, symbol of St. Joseph, patron of the Cathedral in Edmonton, Alberta, to which the bishop was attached when first appointed bishop.

The albatros in flight recalls the bishop's service with the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II. The Maple Leaf recalls the bishop's service with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in World War I.

The motto Charitas Cum Fide (Charity with Faith) is taken from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians, Chapter VI, verse 23.
