The first settlement was founded in the 16th century by Emperor Maximilian II or his retired huntsmen. The houses were built in a straight line ("zeile") near he woods at the river Danube. The stag bearing a cross between the antlers is the attribute of St Hubertus and is a symbol for hunting.
The region is now part of the 2nd district, Leopoldstadt.
